Real Time Software Engineer

Overview:

In this role you would serve as a Software Engineer leading Real-Time software development efforts for control, protection and diagnostic systems at PPPL and both international and national collaborations. This technology is used to measure and control the same phenomena that powers the sun and stars in experiments throughout the world and is a great opportunity to participate in the development of nuclear fusion energy sources.



 



The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.



Responsibilities:

The technology used is heavily based on the Linux operating system and requires a deep understanding of the interaction between it and the hardware it is running on to elicit the required performance needed for our systems.



 



C/C++ software development:



Static and dynamic code analysis (30%)



Development and maintain real-time code (300us-2ms periodics) (50%)



Support and develop non-real-time scientific analysis code (20%)



Qualifications:

Education and Experience:



 



At minimum, a bachelor's degree in one of the following:



Software Engineering



Computer Engineering



Electrical Engineer



The successful candidate should have at least 9+ years of relevant work experience in a professional environment.



 



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



 



The successful candidate has an extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in software engineering. Must be a team player with the ability to communicate ideas effectively to others with varying levels of technical skills. The candidate should also possess the ability to communicate designs through UML, presentations and be comfortable providing material for code reviews.



The successful candidate must have experience with the following:



Redhat/CentOS/Rocky Linux



GCC based compilation, tracing debugging



C++11(and beyond) Standards



Computational hardware/software interaction in real-time and their effects on determinism



Software development in a POSIX/Linux environment



Version control software (such as SVN and GIT).



The ideal candidate would have experience with Concurrent Computer Corporation products:



RedHawk or other Real-Time Linux



Nightstar Tools



The candidate must also possess the ability to work with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and technical staff with varying skill levels and backgrounds.



 



Physical Requirements:



Primarily office work and occasional light hands-on technical work. 



Working Conditions:



Remote or Hybrid working conditions are possible.



Willing to work with the successful candidate to determine what would work best for all parties given work responsibilities and an evolving set of circumstances.
