Major Duties and Responsibilities: 1.
Provide specialized counseling support services and interventions for military veterans and active military students enrolled at the college or seeking to enroll at the college 2.
Provide equity minded and comprehensive counseling services to a culturally diverse student population of student veterans, including academic, career and personal counseling 3.
Develop and implement specialized counseling interventions related to the specific needs of student veterans including addressing identity development, mental health and approaches to learning 4.
Understand and be able to communicate veterans and military educational benefits to veterans and active military students enrolled at or planning to enroll at the college 5.
Refer student veterans to specific community and government resources 6.
Collaborate with college staff in determining students' eligibility and requirements to receive benefits 7.
Work closely with members of the Financial Aid office, Accessibility Resource Center, Student Health Center and the Counseling department in coordinating services for veteran students 8.
Counsel students in education planning, including assisting students in discovering and clarifying their educational and career goals 9.
Conduct new student orientations for student veterans.
Work collaboratively to develop and deliver specialized workshops and learning strategies for all student veterans, especially for minoritized and female student veterans 11.
Assist in planning, developing, documenting and executing specific services, programs and activities pertaining to the Student Success and Support Program Plan (SSSP) as they impact student veterans.
Teach counseling courses and facilitate workshops 13.
Counsel students on probation and facing dismissal; make referrals to appropriate interventions 14.
Attend department, committee, and division meetings; serve on college committees 15.
Participate in professional development, co-curricular, and on-campus activities 16.
Use and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods, including the use of current and future technologies 17.
Participate in curriculum development and student learning outcomes 18.
Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities, College policies, division policies and department policies 19.
Maintain scheduled office and campus hours 20.
Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract Required Qualifications: A.
The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution: 1.
Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; OR 2.
The equivalent (must attach an Equivalency Determination Supplemental Form ) (NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline per title 5, section 53410.1); OR 3.
California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed.
Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential AND transcripts must be submitted with the application.) B.
Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
Preferred Qualifications: 1.
Experience in counseling on crisis interventions, stress management, anger management, anxiety, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the intersecting identities of student veterans.
Experience in developing equity minded specialized counseling interventions related to the needs of all student veterans, including minoritized and female student veterans.
Knowledge of various community resources and support groups for veterans.
Knowledge of evaluation of credit earned from military training experience according to the American Council on Education recommendations/guidelines.
Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state Veterans educational benefits and programs.
Familiarity with employment and training assistance available to military personnel, veterans, and their families.
Evidence of teaching experience in counseling.
Evidence of experience working with students providing academic, career and personal counseling in an educational setting.
Knowledge and use of electronic educational planning and degree audit technology for students.
Experience in developing and/or providing student interventions designed to increase access, retention, and successful degree/transfer completion.
License(s) and Other Requirements : The incumbent may periodically be required to get to a variety of locations.
If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Conditions of Employment: This is a full-time, tenure-track, 11-month contract position that begins in the 2019-20 academic year.
Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.
