Clinical Quality/Variation Consultant

Overview:

M Health Fairview is looking for a Clinical Quality/Variation Consultant in our Quality Improvement department.  The Clinical Quality/Variation Consultant is responsible for leading the planning, design, and implementation of appropriate evidenced-based care to address unwarranted care variation in collaboration with interdisciplinary subject matter expert teams (e.g., physician and nurse leaders, operations, other clinical team members based in service lines, domains of care, hospital or clinic sites, and other facilities). This role ensures that there is standardization and alignment of evidence-based practices, regulatory guidelines and/or practice-based evidence in the form of clinical pathways, physician order sets, nurse protocols, documentation, clinical decision support and other clinical tools. Working with supporting functional team members (e.g., informatics, practice and education, quality and safety, patient education, analytics) and the subject matter expert team, this role facilitates and supports the identification and resolution of operational dependencies to ensure success of these initiatives across the organization including successful change management around initiatives.

Responsibilities/Job Description:

Job Expectations



Leads multifaceted clinical variation reduction initiatives including setting expectations, timelines, project plans with phases and work breakdown structure, expected outcomes from each portion of the work, and dependencies for each initiative.



Prepares materials in advance of each initiative or portion of each project. Demonstrates strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to multitask, make decisions and/or bring recommendations, and communicate effectively

· Works with system leaders, Program Directors, CMOs and Medical Directors, operational and clinical leadership, quality improvement consultants, front line clinicians to formulate or reset care quality goals and identify desired outcomes in accordance with the organization’s quality and value-based care agenda and standards of care.



 



 Conducts literature searches and/or coordinates the curation of evidence including working with clinicians (e.g., subject matter experts) to conduct literature searches and identify best practices.



 



Identifies and documents current processes and existing tools supporting evidence-based care and supporting tools (e.g., ordersets, patient education and other Health IT to engage patients, care maps (e.g., clinical pathways), decision support, documentation).



 



Identifies any gaps with current protocols, care maps and/or real-world clinical practice. Works with quality improvement to remediate gaps in clinical practices, as necessary.



 With clinical leadership, designs and refines clinical standards, pathways, educational materials, and other supporting materials. Evaluates and recommends new tools and processes that can improve care delivery, current work methods, increase safety and operational efficiencies. Brings recommendations to clinical governing bodies (e.g., service line, domain, quality), as appropriate.



 



 Applies principles of reliable design to ensure delivery of evidence-based care and reduction in preventable harm.



 



 Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting the development of implementation strategies (e.g., CMS, JCAHO, HIPPA, etc.).



 



 Provides coaching to less experienced Consultants as well as be involved with department training efforts, as assigned.



 



 Anticipates and identifies barriers to change and develops countermeasures in conjunction with leadership to overcome barriers



 



 Promotes and utilizes health equity principles when reviewing data and developing approaches and assessing opportunities using a holistic approach



Qualifications:

Required



 



Bachelors or Equivalent Experience



 Clinical Experience in Outpatient, Ambulatory or Inpatient, Acute Setting



One Lean Certification, Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, or equivalent improvement methodology experience



2+ years of project management, project coordination, or business analyst experience and/or 2+ years of experience with EHR tools including documentation tools, clinical decision support



2+ years of experience with summarizing and synthesizing data, including experience with using data to inform decision-making, improvement planning preferably including regulatory and quality metrics and/or experience with estimating return on investment in terms of quality safety, cost savings, compliance, satisfaction, or other value metrics



Demonstrated relational qualities (active listening, clear/concise communication, humble inquiry, effective relationship building, understanding of customer requirements/meeting them where they are at)



Experience leading and partnering with operational leaders on projects, preferably in a healthcare setting and/or facilitating multi-disciplinary groups through successful initiatives and change



Advanced skills in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project, SharePoint, OneNote); proficiency with statistical or data presentation software (e.g., Minitab, SAS, Stata, R, PowerBI, Tableau).



Clinical Certification including Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, other Equivalent Certification, or Experience



 



Preferred



 Exposure to Agile project management



Experience designing solutions to address opportunities based upon data, evidence, clinical protocols, and operational constraints in collaboration with stakeholders



 Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or completion within 2 years.
