Medical Technologist - Lead, Microbiology, UofL Health-University Hospital, Days, Full Time
Overview:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist-Technical Lead shall have a thorough knowledge of Laboratory Science and shall demonstrate proficiency in the skills and practices of the section. The Technical Lead They shall assist the Laboratory Supervisor in maintaining laboratory standards in accordance with accrediting bodies, including, but not limited to CAP, CDC, CLIA, FACHT, FDA, JCAHO, and HCFA. They shall be responsible for technical review of standard operating procedures, validation of new procedures, and review and coordination of quality control.
Responsibilities:
Submits feedback to the Laboratory Supervisor for technical evaluation of section employees (includes Initial competency and skills assessment/validation).
Performs direct observation and ensures competency for all department staff.
Recommends and implements improvements necessary to achieve operational goals and to improve patient outcomes.
Monitors staffing needs.
Monitors quality control and proficiency testing for department
Ensures that accreditation standards are met for department in accordance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, AABB, FDA, OSHA, etc.
Demonstrates comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals. Reviews Manuals biannually, revises procedures as necessary.
Attends required department or hospital meetings.
Maintains staffing for call-ins or other unusual circumstances.
Maintains an adequate reagent and supply inventory in the department.
Evaluates new technologies for the section in conjunction with the Medical Director of the department.
Serves in a problem solving role for the department.
Assists in the orientation of new department employees as demonstrated by the completed orientation checklist in the employees personnel file.
Meets regularly with Laboratory Supervisor and section Medical Director and seeks involvement regarding capital purchases, operational, and technical issues.
Identifies and reports any safety hazards or concerns
Makes suggestions for improvements of procedures and workflow
Communicates to staff consistently.
Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education:
MLT(ASCP), MLT(AMT), qualified as a medical laboratory technician under CLIA rules. (required)
MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW), qualified as a technologist under CLIA rules, or equivalent. (preferred)
Appropriate Bachelor’s degree required to meet CLIA rules.
Experience:
2 years of hospital laboratory experience in section leading (required)
Previous experience with automated equipment in department supervising (preferred)
Certification:
MLT(ASCP), MLT(AMT), MT(ASCP), MT(AMT), MT(HEW) (required)
Individuals that are newly certified beginning January 2004 must participate in the BOR Certification Maintenance Program
Specialty certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology (SBB,SC,SH,SM, SCYM, SMB) (preferred)
