Description PositionSummary: The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registerednurse who functions in an expanded role, or as a first assistant.
The RNFA works closely and assists the under the supervision of thesurgeon in providing quality, efficient, continuous and cost-effective careduring the patient's hospitalization.
The RNFA is amember of the surgical team.
The RNFA practices in collaboration with, andunder the direction of the surgeon during the intra-operative phase.
The RNFAutilizes the nursing process and AORN nursing practice standards.
The RNFAfunctions as an Operating Room circulator or RN scrub when not assigned to theRNFA role.
Responsibilities include directing unlicensed employee activity,synthesizing patient information, assessment of patients, planning ofcare/intervention, teaching patients/family, implementation of treatmentplan/MD orders, and evaluation of care rendered.
The RNFA utilizes knowledge ofpatient age, cultural diversity, and psychosocial or spiritual needs into thepatient’s plan of care.
The RNFA contributes to the promotion of qualitynursing care through performance improvement processes that demonstratespositive outcomes in patient care.
In addition, the RNFA collaborates withother professional disciplines to ensure safe and effective patient caredelivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes.
Qualifications Qualifications/Education / Licensure / Certification Minimum 2 years’ experience as an operating room nurse, and Current perioperative nursing (CNOR) certification and Documented completion of a CNOR approved formal Registered Nurse First Assistant Training Program and completion of required hours of preceptorship (this requirement shall not apply to those RNFAs who have practice prerogatives as of December 31, 2004) BSN degree completed Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in California required Basic Life Support (BLS) required for all areas.
