Term Limited Respiratory Disease Surveillance Epidemiologist

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This is a Term-Limited position and funding cannot be guaranteed beyond May 31,

This position is in the Communicable Disease Branch of the Division Control and

Environmental Epidemiology Division. The purpose of the Communicable Disease

Branch is to monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable

diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado

statute, including enteric diseases, invasive bacterial diseases, respiratory

diseases, vaccine preventable diseases, zoonotic diseases, foodborne and

waterborne diseases, and health care-associated infections.


* Conducts active surveillance for respiratory diseases, with a focus on

COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

* Leads and participates in investigations of clusters or outbreaks of

infections related to respiratory disease (eg, RSV, influenza, COVID-19).

* Conducts active laboratory surveillance for Emerging Infections program


* Analyzes and summarizes surveillance data.

* Coordinate surveillance projects with CDC

* Presents data in written reports and oral presentations.

* On assigned days, this position participates in the routine epi-call

schedule by answering e-mail questions and telephone calls from health

care providers, patients, and the public on a variety of communicable

diseases issues.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights


* Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's

degree in public health, health sciences, epidemiology, or a closely

related field.


* Two years of full-time professional experience working in infection

control, surveillance, or epidemiology at a state or local health

department or a healthcare setting.


* Public health or infection control, surveillance, or epidemiology

experience in a state/local health department or healthcare setting may

substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

* A master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or a closely related

field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year


The requiredexperience must be substantiated within the work experience section

The preferred experience, competencies, and abilities are highly desirable for

this position and will be considered in selecting the successful candidate:

* Master's degree in Public Health or related field

* Experience in a public health setting

* Knowledge of and experience with communicable disease surveillance


* Experience analyzing data using SAS

* Experiencing using databases and related software, including Excel, SAS,

SQL, and Redcap

* Experience reviewing medical records

* Experience providing technical assistance and guidance to the public and

professionals (such as hospital staff and healthcare providers)

* Knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of epidemiology

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Detail-oriented and thorough in completing work tasks

* Strong interpersonal skills

* Ability to apply critical thinking skills when making decisions or

solving problems

* Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work


* Must maintain the ability and willingness to independently travel

approximately 5% of the time. Travel out-of-state may occur to attend

meetings and conferences.

* On Call Status: Must be willing to be on-call in the event of an

emergency (e.g. bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak,

or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the

regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may

be in place.

of the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and be required to report to
